Periodic Table of Typefaces

I like the periodic table. It is actually more useful than you'd think. Similarly behaving elements are grouped in blocks as well as columns, based on electrons and atomic mass, etc. Easily found at a glance! I don't remember who came up with the latest layout, but it's very functional. I have a secret love for it from my chem/bio days. I had it on my wall...but next to my desk, not my bed. But now I also appreciate it as a well-designed infographic.

I want to make a version that also has nice typography. Here is one OF typography:

Autobahn's Evergreen Font

I can't read it, but I think Autobahn is a small graphic design company from the Netherlands. They made a font out of grass sod. If you go to the link, it shows their whole process.

They also have fonts made of striped toothpaste, ketchup, whipped cream, hair gel, and maple syrup.

Tags on a Dumpster

Even though it's a dumpster, it looks pretty good. From Flickr user KiiD G@B3.

The Stranger Music Poster

Atticus, Bunny, and I pulled a poster off a pole today on Pine. It is for a CD release for some bands for The Stranger by Chelsea Conboy:

It could be hand type, but it could be a font that was stretched in places. You decide. I did a quick scan and didn't bother to fix the details, but the color is brighter in real life.

Wordle

This site called Wordle makes word clouds based on word frequency out of any text or website you feed it. You can change the font and colors, too.

I did one of the Seattle Times home page:

And one of Obama's inaugural speech:

Font Game

I just got a 28 out of 34 on I Love Typography's "The Rather Difficult Font Game." Maybe I should study more.

Cast Metal Type

I Love Typography had a picture up of metal type from thetypejunkie on Flickr:

Axel Peemoeller's Eureka Carpark

Axel Peemoeller designed an award-winning wayfinding system for a Melbourne parking garage:

There are more cool pictures of it on his website.

Designing the News

For a final university project, Dave Bowker is redesigning the Guardian, a UK newspaper, in different visualizations to explore how information can be presented. Designing the News is a blog that documents the project. There are six versions, one for every day of the week the Guardian is printed.

My favorite is Saturday:

Superdeluxe Monogram Patterns

Since this week our assignment is to make patterns with letterforms, I thought this from Superdeluxe NYC would be appropriate:

Evan Hecox

One of my favorite designer/artists is Evan Hecox. He does a lot of skate deck series and handwriting for Chocolate and has prints available at Arkitip. He has the best handwriting:

I have a series of 6 of his decks I'm planning on mounting on my wall. I will post them when I get them up.

Sprout by Thomas Campbell

This is one of my favorite surf movies. It's not the usual surf movie. It's a good example of current surf culture without all the thrashy thruster hype. Thomas Campbell is a California artist and surfer, among other things.

House Ampersands

House has some things I wouldn't mind having in my home:

House Industries cast iron ampersand, $200. They have an aluminum one, and a wood cutting board, too.

...and $30 cotton twill ampersand totes.

Comalle

This looks delicious:

Element's Logo

I came across the site for Element, a small design and marketing group in Columbus, Ohio. They have a friendly neighborhood sort of feel, but what I like most is the type in their logo. It all goes well together.
